Attending the 2018 Advancing Ethical Research (AER) Conference was a fantastic opportunity to connect with colleagues, hear renowned speakers address regulatory hot topics, and share ideas and best practices. Science and technology are expanding exponentially; as a result, our research community is becoming increasingly diverse and multi-center research is booming. While historically the regulations have remained relatively unchanged, in recent years the regulatory community has worked together to provide feedback on suggested major updates and new guidance which are greatly shifting the regulatory world. Share your experience as an HRPP/IRB professional by July 12

As the Certified IRB Professional (CIP®) program approaches its milestone twentieth year, PRIM&R and the CIP Council are undertaking a series of activities aimed at assessing the current eligibility guidelines and the content of the CIP exam against the tasks and responsibilities that those charged with HRPP/IRB administration perform. The first part of this process is a comprehensive job analysis survey, which aims to capture the range of responsibilities for which offices that oversee IRBs are accountable. Anyone involved with the management and administration of HRPP/IRBs is encouraged to participate in this important project before the survey closes on July 12. Read more

Research Involving an Undocumented Population: Understanding the Challenges

I am a researcher working in an inner-city neighborhood serving a disadvantaged population. As such, I found the session “Navigating uncertainty: Research with Undocumented Immigrants” at the 2018 Advancing Ethical Research Conference quite relevant to my practice. This presentation helped me to understand the vulnerability of undocumented individuals involved in research. A person's documentation status may be a risk factor for health disparities; however, undocumented individuals should not be automatically excluded from research. Read more

How should a “reasonable” HRPP approach key information?

“One person’s flexibility is another person’s ambiguity.”

I kept going back to this comment, articulated by Carrie Wolinetz (NIH), as I helped my HRPP prepare for the revised Common Rule implementation in January.  Although Dr. Wolinetz was referring to the NIH’s Genomic Data Sharing Policy, the phrase is a perfect expression of my thoughts on the “concise and focused presentation of the key information” that now must appear at the beginning of consent forms.
