I am often asked what I do for a living. My very limited response is research compliance. I was never taught how to effectively communicate the importance of animal research and its compliance to a non-scientist. To ease this nagging feeling of neglect, I set out to find resources and opportunities to learn more about how to effectively communicate about science and my role as a research animal welfare advocate. Meet Whitney Petrie, PhD, CPIA, RLATG, who'll be covering the 2021 IACUC Virtual Conference (IACUC21) as a member of the Blog Squad: "Please list your family's cancer history". My list is very long, on both my mother's and father's side of the family. I learned from a very young age how devastating cancer can be, but I also learned that I wanted to be involved in oncology, just not as a doctor. With every vaccine, with every cancer treatment, with every family history questionnaire, I am reminded why I have chosen a career in biomedical research and animal research compliance.
