I am often asked what I do for a living. My very limited response is research compliance. I was never taught how to effectively communicate the importance of animal research and its compliance to a non-scientist. To ease this nagging feeling of neglect, I set out to find resources and opportunities to learn more about how to effectively communicate about science and my role as a research animal welfare advocate. I like to joke that I've been on "all sides of the research endeavor." I've done bench science, social science, and research administration. While I've been involved in research ethics in various capacities over the years, this will be my first chance to attend (albeit virtually) PRIM&R's Advancing Ethical Research Conference, and I couldn't be more excited to have the chance to write about it as part of the Blog Squad. In 2022, instead of the annual IACUC Conference that we look forward to each Spring, we will have something new to anticipate in the Fall: the PRIM&R Annual Conference, which will encompass IACUC and animal research topics alongside human subjects research topics. This new joint conference format will bring the best of both of these communities, taking advantage of what we have come to know and love about the PRIM&R IACUC Conference and adding exposure to issues pertinent to both groups and that have become increasingly important in today’s research environment.
