The digitization of everyday life has led to an interesting phenomenon for research administrators; the ethical concerns that arise from secondary uses of large and open data now pose a greater challenge for the ethical management of research data than do the conventional challenges of primary data acquisition. As debates over consent forms give way to discussions of differential privacy, it is hard to ignore the new reality that the highest levels of risk and benefit to human participants in research may now arise from secondary data uses. Since the National Archives in Washington were founded they have solved historical mysteries, provided key information, and unlocked a great deal of forgotten knowledge. The power of records and record keeping is influential at all levels of human existence, but also may be harmful to the least empowered individuals in society (such as refugees or the elderly). At PRIM&R's AER Conference, presenters offered insights into essential documentation and stressed the importance of good record keeping and data management for IRBs. Read more

Despite their significant importance in society and communities, there is a scarcity of research on the undocumented immigrant population. In addition, only a handful of studies address the social and emotional concerns of undocumented immigrants and students. At AER18, panelists Gene Gloeckner, PhD; Elizabeth Jach, MA; and Colleen Kohashi, MA, CIP, presented ways to ethically and sensitively conduct research with undocumented immigrants. Read more

On October 10, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a Request for Information (RFI) from the public on Proposed Provisions for a Draft Data Management and Sharing Policy for NIH Funded or Supported Research. According to the NIH, it will take into account the feedback received as it develops a draft of a new NIH policy for data management and sharing. That draft will also be open for public comment, at a future date. Comments on this first stage of policymaking, the proposed provisions, are due December 10, 2018. Read more
